چکیده

In developing the PLAN, WPI sought to address concerns inherent to its then traditional curriculum that was rigid, unresponsive to differences among students, and was compartmentalized by independent departments so that intellectual growth was fragmented. The PLAN was an entirely new and different educational program responsive to the needs of students and society while nurruring sensitivity to the ideas and values of our society. It included fundamental departures from the traditional elements of technical education including: A. The achievement of competence rather than the accumulation of credits. B. Individual freedom and responsbility in planning the program of study. C. A large component of project and independent study learning. D. Emphasis on education as a coopera tive venture between faculty and students. Frequently, changes to engineering curricula involve the addition of new material to a well-established body of knowledge. Deciding which components to eliminate becomes the central issue in curricula reform. To adopt and implement the PLAN, the WPI community necessarily employed a more fundamental approach by focusing on learning rather than information transfer. Additionally, the PLAN has been a dynamic entity undergoing continual and substantive revision in the best spirit of continuous improvement. In the following sections the processes invoked in the adoption and revision of the PLAN by the WPI community are outlined in the hope they may help guide other faculties in embracing substantive revision.

Transforming Geocentric Cartesian Coordinates to Geodetic Coordinates by a New Initial Value Calculation Paradigm

Transforming geocentric Cartesian coordinates (X, Y, Z) to geodetic curvilinear coordinates (φ, λ, h) on a biaxial ellipsoid is one of the problems used in satellite positioning, coordinates conversion between reference systems, astronomy and geodetic calculations. For this purpose, various methods including Closed-form, Vector method and Fixed-point method have been developed. In this paper, a...

Why we need Reconfigurable Computing Education

Reconfigurable Computing, the second RAM-based machine paradigm offers drastic reduction of the electric energy budget and speedup factors by several orders of magnitude compared to using the von Neumann paradigm, now loosing its dominance. This paper advocates to introduce a dual paradigm transdisciplinary education by using Configware Engineering as the counterpart of Software Engineering. by...

Introduction to the teachings of the transcendental paradigm in the process of teaching-learning and its critique

The purpose of this study is to study the teachings of the transcendental paradigm in the process of teaching-learning and its critique. In order to achieve the purpose of the research, three methods of conceptual, inference and critical analysis have been used to analyze and critique the foreman paradigm. Findings of the research indicate that meta-text instead of oral text emphasizes written ...

Safety I to Safety II: A Paradigm Shift or More Work as Imagined?; Comment on “False Dawns and New Horizons in Patient Safety Research and Practice”

In their editorial, Mannion and Braithwaite contend that the approach to solving the problem of unsafe care, Safety I, is flawed and requires a shift in thinking to what they are calling Safety II. We have reservations as to whether by itself the shift from Safety I to Safety II is sufficient. Perhaps our failure to improve outcomes in the field of patient safety and quality lies less in our ap...
